African Insights

The future looks bright in Africa.

That much was made clear by the Strategic Dialogue on the Africa-Europe Ocean Economy, which provided a remarkable platform for connecting fellow change makers who are revolutionizing their communities across Africa. Hosted by the Africa-Europe Foundation, Peace Boat US, and Ocean Hub Africa in the vibrant city of Cape Town, this event offered a profound insight into ocean action initiatives within the region.

Our journey on February 27th commenced with an awe-inspiring tour of the city, where the captivating murals painted by the PangeaSeed Foundation caught our attention. Oftentimes when the topic of ocean governance pops up, we are quick to think of policies and formal institutions, but really, we the people have a huge role to play. Beautiful murals, as such, bring about a conversation on the table. Children start asking their parents questions: What is the mural about? What are they doing there? These simple things spark curiosity, which brings about positive change.

We then gathered at the port against the bustling docks’ backdrop, and we shared our diverse experiences and insights into ocean-related endeavors. The interactive dialogue on the “Africa-Europe Youth Ocean Ambassador Network” stimulated thought-provoking discussions on African-led initiatives, ocean governance, renewable energy, and the Blue Economy. Engaging presentations showcased impactful initiatives combating ocean pollution, complemented by an inspiring documentary featuring Zanditha, the black mermaid, sharing her journey from fear to freedom as a passionate free diver.

Boarding the Peace Boat was a nostalgic experience, evoking memories from years past. The onboard events delved into strategic dialogues on the nexus of climate, development, renewable energy, and ocean issues, alongside presentations highlighting youth-led actions in advancing the Blue Economy. Peace Boat Founder Yoshioka Tatsuya also introduced Peace Boat’s Ecoship using solar and wind power as an example of decarbonization of the maritime sector.

I am grateful to the Africa-Europe Foundation, Peace Boat US, and OceanHub Africa for organizing this enriching experience, and of course Blue Planet Alliance. Learning from collaborating with such remarkable individuals has been an honor, and the collective commitment to ocean conservation and sustainable development inspires me.

Here's to the young African leaders of today!
