BLUE PLANET ALLIANCE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

BY SPECIAL INVITATION ONLY

The Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship program brings representatives from island nations and territories to Hawaii for a rigorous week-long seminar and workshop designed to help islands develop their own plans for a 100% renewable-energy transition.

Airfare, lodging, transportation, and most meals are covered by Blue Planet Alliance, and fellows also receive a stipend for personal meals.

“Islands bear the brunt of the climate crisis, suffering its most devastating impacts, while also paying the highest price for fossil-fuel-based electricity. Transitioning to 100% renewable energy is the answer. Islands must be the vanguard in the world’s transition to clean energy. As they embrace this shift, they stand to save tremendous financial resources.

We are already doing it in Hawaii — and that is why we’re welcoming these other islands to join us, to share our renewable-energy story, and work in concert with them to help them achieve 100% renewable energy on their islands.”

Henk Rogers

Founder, Blue Planet Alliance

We are leading a clean-energy revolution, and the plan is to start with islands.

HAWAII LED THE WAY

Hawaii was the first U.S. state to legislatively mandate a transition to 100% renewable energy by 2045, the result of years of lobbying, campaigning, and convening by our sister organization, Blue Planet Foundation, also founded by Henk Rogers.

More than 20 U.S. states and territories have since followed suit with their own versions of that goal to transition away from carbon-based fuels, and Blue Planet Alliance was founded precisely to help island nations and territories replicate the success in Hawaii.

We launched the Fellowship program in October 2023, marking the first step in a global movement to end reliance on carbon-based fuels.

The program offers participants the chance to engage with policy experts, utility executives, community organizers, and climate-solution advocates, all sharing insights on why renewable energy is the solution—and how we can achieve it together. Beyond providing valuable knowledge to take back to their communities, the program fosters deeper dialogue, helping identify each island's unique challenges and opportunities.

Over the course of a week, participants will engage in daily activities, cross-island discussions, resource sharing, and hear from a range of public and private sector speakers. The following are an example of the kinds of topics covered during the program:

  • Developing utility-scale projects

  • Integrating variable resources on the grid

  • Energy-efficiency and buildings

  • Regulatory frameworks and policy

  • Financing and grants

  • Community engagement

  • Tools for energy equity

We aim to convene eight to 10 island states and territories twice a year, helping each jurisdiction jumpstart their own 100% renewable-energy transitions, and amplify their voices in global diplomacy—demonstrating the transformative potential of the Alliance.

To date, 28 nations and territories have participated in the program across three cohorts.
