Blue Planet Foundation Founder Henk Rogers Shares Key to Reaching Guam’s 100% Renewable Energy Mission

On April 8th, 2022, featured speaker Henk Rogers spoke to more than 200 of Guam’s sustainability community stakeholders at the 13th Annual University of Guam Conference on Island Sustainability at the Hyatt Regency Guam. As an innovator, entrepreneur, renewable-energy advocate, and founder of Blue Planet Foundation and Blue Planet Alliance, Rogers shared lessons learned so far in working toward Hawai‘i’s 100% renewable energy mandate by 2045.

In 2015, Rogers’ Blue Planet Foundation led a campaign to pass the nation’s first 100% renewable energy legislation in Hawai‘i. Since then, the organization has worked with the state’s utility company to change its business model to be able to make money from switching to renewable energy.

“[The utility company] went from being our worst enemy when we were trying to pass the 100% renewable energy mandate to being our best friend,” said Rogers. “They make more money the quicker they switch to renewable energy. Now, we’re all rowing in the same direction, which means we are going to get there. We are going to reach our goal of 100% clean energy by 2045.”

Two years ago, Guam also passed and signed into law legislation that requires the Guam Power Authority to include 50% renewable energy in its portfolio by 2035, and 100% by 2045.

That same year, Rogers founded the Blue Planet Alliance, expanding Blue Planet Foundation’s “mandate first, business model second” approach to creating a world in which humanity and nature live in harmony.

This year, the Alliance is focused on working with island nations to establish government mandates and pathways toward 100% renewable energy by 2045, starting with Palau, the Dominican Republic, and 10 other island countries.

“I started the Blue Planet Alliance for all of us to join together to fight an existential threat. The time to make the change is now. The world has to change. There is no other choice. My slogan is, ‘We are doing this!’” Roger added.

Rogers' presentation to the 13th Annual University of Guam Conference on Island Sustainability will also be available to view on-demand at blueplanetalliance.org

Following his presentation in Guam, Rogers and the Blue Planet Alliance team headed to the Our Ocean Conference.
